This Saturday is the solstice — sol and sistere, the sun standing still. The longest day, when the sun pauses at the top of its arc before starting back. Every culture that paid attention to the sky built a way to mark it. At Magic Forest, we mark it the way that fits this place: a yoga practice in the afternoon, the creek when the day is hottest, a fire circle as the sun starts down, a sauna into the evening, dinner together, and music into the night. Mila co-hosts; I bring decades of Aṣṭāṅga and Indian philosophical study, and the land does most of the rest.
This is family land. I grew up in these woods and inherited the property from my parents. For more than thirty years we’ve been gathering people out here for yoga and various kinds of working with the land. The moment you turn off the pavement, you feel it — a million miles from anywhere.
Locals say Capone’s people ran moonshine off this road during Prohibition, and that there’s treasure buried somewhere in these woods. I can’t vouch for either. This time of year the place is dense, jungley, alive — a real magic forest.
The Evening’s Flow
Solstice Yoga Practice — All Levels
Āsana practice in our shala in the forest. Steady, suited to all bodies and levels of experience. A short opening to mark the day.
Led by AndrewUp Spring Creek
Walk up the creek to swim, cool off, and relax. The water comes out of the rocks clean and cold. There’s also a mud bath with three colors of clay along the way, if you’re feeling adventurous.
Fire Circle
We light the fire and gather around it. Time to share — what we’re holding, what we’re hoping for as the new solar year turns. I’ll bring some of the yogic angle on the longest day; June 21 is International Yoga Day, and the sun has been at the center of Indian philosophical thought as long as the tradition has existed — with echoes in every tradition that ever watched the sky.
Led by AndrewWood-Fired Sauna
The sauna opens in the early evening, heated by wood. Sit, sweat, purify, and connect with the elements. The sauna stays warm for about two hours — stay as long as it serves you.
Vegetarian Potluck
After the sauna we sit down to eat together. Bring a dish to share. Relax, talk, no hurry to get anywhere.
Music Around the Fire
Bring your voice and any instruments you play. We make music together as the night settles. The fire keeps on, and you’re welcome to camp on the land — stay as long as you like.
What to Bring
