Aditya Hridyam 6 Week Course
With Dr. M A Jayashree and Dr. M A Narasimhan
Sunday June 5 - Sunday July 10
We are grateful and honored to present Aditya Hridyam with Dr. M A Jayashree and Dr. M A Narasimhan! This mantra has been central in the unfolding of Mysore Yoga Traditions film, conference and ongoing educational opportunities. It is actually a tool or even weapon for calling light and positivity into ones own mind and being. It can be very transformative if it is chanted regularly and it creates a kind of restructuring of the nervous system.
In this course, we will learn to chant Aditya Hridayam - one of India’s most powerful and revered mantras - as well as the philosophy behind each Sanskrit sloka.
This mantra comes from India’s most famous epic tale, The Rāmāyana. At the climax of the adventure, the hero of the tale, Rama, is exhausted and unable to fight on any longer- just as he is about to face his final battle against the 10-headed demon king Ravana. Witnessing this distressful scene, the Gods send the great Sage Agastya to intervene to teach Rama this most sacred of all mantras- the Aditya Hridayam, by which he is able to regain his splendor and defeat Ravana to restore balance to the world.
Of course, the metaphor here is incredibly deep and profound, representing the internal battle we each face in life as human beings. By the chanting of this mantra, we are able to prevail against our own inner challenges and obstacles in life and emerge victorious in our own true luminous nature.
We will learn each sloka through the 'Sruti Parampara' call and response method, which is a traditional and effective method of pronunciation, remembering and understanding Sanskrit language and texts. The method is accessible to all, and is in itself a traditional and transformative yoga practice. Jayashree will work with each participant individually to ensure everyone gets a chance to practice chanting each week.
The Adita Hrdayam is composed of 30 slokas. Each week, we will learn to chant roughly 5 slokas with Jayashree, followed by the philosophical explanations of each one by Narasimhan. in this way, learning the entire mantra over a period of 6 weeks, students have the ability to practice over a period of time and really digest the sound and meaning of each sloka before continuing to the next. In this way, we achieve a deep understanding of the mantra over a period of the course.
In addition to the live Zoom sessions, participants will also receive a link to view the recording of each class for practicing through the course. Each class session will be a minimum of 90 minutes.
